I’m finding myself looking to music a lot these days for inspiration. For me, sometimes the best escape from reality is to play it loud and dance. These movies champion stuff that’s on my mind right now—fearless self expression, tuning into our own creativity, and a celebration of freedom.
Studio 54: The Documentary
I find Studio 54 and the cultural phenomenon it became to be endlessly inspiring. The style, the space, and the glamorous energy really represents a time that has never been seen before or since; if I could wish myself to any time or place it would be here. Visually it doesn’t get any better than this.
Wattstax
Wattstax was a benefit concert organized by Stax Records to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the 1965 Los Angeles riots. The concert took place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on August 20, 1972, and the documentary is a moving and soulful tribute to the African-American community of Watts in Los Angeles in the early 70’s.
Muscle Shoals
The story of a recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama that has drawn some of the world’s most prolific artists to create legendary recordings. The free flowing creativity and magic described by those who have created there really speaks to me. And it’s also full of great music style.
